Last week I was speaking at a healthcare conference in Tampa, Florida. A conference room full of executives, leaders, and individual contributors, all worried about one thing — how to overcome the fear of change.
If you’ve ever felt anxious about shifting priorities, new technology, or constant organizational changes, you’re not alone. Learning how to overcome the fear of change is one of the biggest leadership challenges today.
The pace of change, the amount of change, the burden of change - it's just too much for most leaders, organizations, and individual contributors to handle in today's marketplace.
I had three companies in the room going through mergers, leading to title changes, territory reorganizing, and layoffs - lots of layoffs. Two other companies were stressed out about how technology was going to impact their company in the next year, and five more companies were dealing with slowing sales pipelines due to customers trying to navigate this government shutdown.
Whether you're in healthcare or not, it seems everyone is experiencing change - everyone is struggling with it - and everyone wants to know one thing: how do you deal with this much change?
Why We Struggle to Overcome the Fear of Change in Today’s Marketplace
Is it just me, or does change feel harder to handle, predict, and navigate than ever before?
Well, whether you feel it or not, change is harder than ever.
Here are a few reasons why:
- The Pace of Change Has Exploded: According to Accenture, the pace of change has increased 183% in just four years. That means what used to take a decade now happens in months. The problem? Our systems — and our people — haven’t evolved at the same speed.
- People Are Burned Out: Four out of five employees report feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or anxious about the future. It’s not that they can’t handle change — it’s that they haven’t had time to recover from the last one.
- We’re Trying to “Manage” Change Instead of Leverage It: Seventy percent of change initiatives still fail because most leaders treat change as an event — something to get through — rather than a constant condition to master. The old model of “announce, adapt, move on” simply doesn’t work anymore.
- Information Overload = Decision Paralysis: Between AI, data, and digital everything, we’re swimming in information — and drowning in indecision. The more we know, the less we act. And fear grows in the absence of action.
- Trust Is the New Currency: In times of uncertainty, people crave stability. They don’t want more plans; they want leaders they can believe in. When trust is high, change feels manageable. When its low, even small shifts feel threatening.
So how do you overcome the fear of change and handle this level and pace of disruption?
5 Strategies to Take the Fear Out of Change
So, what do you do? How do you handle the fact that change is hard, and people are struggling? You still have goals to hit, a company to grow, and the pace of change is not slowing down. This is not a problem that is going away.
So where do you start? You need to ASK for CHANGE. My new innovative, thought provoking formula that moves you from fearing change to using it as fuel to grow your business and gain competitive advantage.
This is a well-researched, proven formula to help position you as a leader in the field of change.
- Adapt Your Perspective
Your biggest challenge isn’t change itself — it’s the fear of change that causes resistance. The foundation of overcoming the fear of change and thriving in chaos right now is to shift how you think, feel, and act about change. You need to believe, just make the decision that change - even the toughest kind - always leads to opportunity.
Why? Because your mind will find what it focuses on. If you focus on all the challenges and problems these changes are bringing, then your mind will find more of those. If you focus on how the change could bring opportunity, then your mind will find more reasons to reinforce that belief.
The truth is, when uncertainty hits, you have no idea what is going to happen or what is coming next. Your best path to ensure a positive outcome is to position your mind to opportunity rather than obstacle. - Focus on People
I think this is one of the most powerful strategies to turn uncertainty to your competitive advantage, and the key to ASK for CHANGE.
The biggest struggle you have with change is that you are trying to decide what to do - how to sell, how to engage our team, how to navigate these changes without talking to the people all this change is impacting. A good idea, but the problem is that you are trying to do it internally rather than externally.
Let me explain. The fear of change, the anxiety with change, is that you are trying to work within your organization to figure out how to navigate these shifts, rather than talking and listening to the people who have the answers.
Your path to growth and profitability in the face of uncertainty is revealed by listening. The answers you need will come by listening to your customers, your team and your industry peers.
The way to turn uncertainty to competitive advantage is to learn what is not being met in the marketplace - and the answer to that question lies in what your team, your customers, and your industry peers are saying. - Commit To Process
And last but not least is Commit To Process. I think the most challenging thing about uncertainty is that to be successful, you have to be highly focused, clear on what you want and where you are headed, while simultaneously ready to shift that plan on a dime.
Sounds impossible, right? You are now living in a time when there is more change happening outside of your business than inside it. You have less control over not only the change, but the amount of it, and the pace of it - it's tough.
But if you commit to the process, you can do the impossible, be highly focused, and incredibly agile. And you do that by ensuring that you take time, at least quarterly, to look outside of your business and look for and predict the changes that are coming.
Change can be your greatest opportunity if you see it coming; if you ignore change, change will bury you. You know change is coming, so use the time that you have now to get ready for those changes.
Fear is natural. But with the right strategies, it doesn’t have to be fatal. Change isn’t something to survive — it’s something to leverage. Change is something you can actually use as a competitive advantage.
